7 days minimum for a satisfying safari; 10–14 days for a comprehensive Kenya experience including multiple parks and the beach. Less than 7 days is possible but limits your options — you may see the Maasai Mara and Nairobi, but not much else. With 10 days you can do two parks comfortably. With 14 days you can add the beach and feel unhurried throughout.
10-Day Kenya Itinerary: Classic Safari Circuit
What does a 10-day Kenya safari look like?
Day 1 — Arrive Nairobi
Land at JKIA. Transfer to hotel in Westlands or Karen. Rest, acclimatize to the altitude. Dinner in Nairobi — try a local nyama choma restaurant or one of Westlands' excellent dining options.
Day 2 — Nairobi Day
Morning: Nairobi National Park game drive (lions, rhinos, giraffes against the city skyline — 7km from the CBD). Afternoon: Giraffe Centre and David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Karen. Evening: Nairobi National Museum or Westlands dining.
Days 3–6 — Maasai Mara (4 nights)
Fly from Nairobi Wilson Airport to one of the Mara airstrips (~45 min) or drive (~5.5 hours). Four nights is the ideal Mara stay — it gives you three full mornings, two afternoons, and the possibility of two different camp locations if you want variety. Activities: twice-daily game drives, a hot air balloon safari (pre-book), a Maasai village visit, and sundowner drinks on the savanna. This is where you encounter the Big Five, the Great Migration river crossings (Jul–Oct), and Kenya's most dramatic wildlife densities.
Days 7–8 — Amboseli National Park (2 nights)
Fly Mara to Amboseli (via Nairobi Wilson) or drive from Nairobi (~4 hours). Amboseli is the best place in Kenya to see elephant herds — large family groups with Mount Kilimanjaro as the backdrop. Two nights gives you two full game drives. Excellent birdwatching and the iconic Kilimanjaro photography opportunities, best at dawn before clouds build.
Day 9 — Return to Nairobi
Morning game drive. Fly or drive back to Nairobi by midday. Afternoon free — shopping at the Maasai Market, last lunch in Nairobi. Evening at leisure.
Day 10 — Depart
Morning departure from JKIA, or a morning visit to Karen Blixen Museum if your flight is afternoon.
14-Day Kenya Itinerary: Safari & Beach
What does a 14-day Kenya “bush and beach” trip look like?
Day 1 — Arrive Nairobi
Airport transfer, hotel, rest.
Day 2 — Nairobi
Nairobi National Park, Giraffe Centre, Elephant Orphanage. City dinner.
Days 3–6 — Maasai Mara (4 nights)
As above — fly from Wilson, four nights of game drives, balloon safari, Maasai village.
Days 7–8 — Lake Nakuru (2 nights)
Drive or fly from the Mara via Naivasha to Lake Nakuru National Park (~3.5 hours from Nairobi). Lake Nakuru is Kenya's best park for rhino — both black and white. Also famous for flamingos (numbers vary seasonally), Rothschild's giraffe, lion, and leopard. Compact park, easy to cover in two days. Combine with a short stop at Lake Naivasha for hippo boat rides and Hell's Gate cycling (30 minutes from Nakuru).
Days 9–10 — Amboseli National Park (2 nights)
Elephants and Kilimanjaro. Drive Nakuru–Nairobi–Amboseli (~6 hours total with a break) or fly.
Day 11 — Transfer to Coast
Morning game drive in Amboseli. Drive to Amboseli airstrip and fly to Diani Beach (Ukunda Airport) via Nairobi Wilson — approximately 2 hours total. Check in to your beach hotel. First swim in the Indian Ocean.
Days 12–13 — Diani Beach (2 nights)
Two full days to decompress after the safari. Options: kite surfing lessons, snorkelling at Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, glass-bottom boat tour, deep sea fishing charter, or simply relaxing on one of Africa's best beaches. Seafood dinners on the beach strip.
Day 14 — Depart
Morning beach walk. Fly from Ukunda Airstrip to JKIA Mombasa and connect to your international flight, or fly Diani direct to Nairobi Wilson and transfer to JKIA for departure.
Should You Add Tanzania to a Kenya Trip?
Should I combine Kenya with Tanzania?
A Kenya–Tanzania combination is one of the world's great safari itineraries — and genuinely worthwhile if you have 14+ days. Arusha in northern Tanzania is just 270km from Nairobi, and the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Mount Kilimanjaro are all within reach.
Typical combination structure: fly Nairobi–Kilimanjaro Airport, spend 4–5 nights in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, then fly or drive to Nairobi for onward Kenya safari and coast. Or reverse the order. The calving season (January–February) in the southern Serengeti is best seen from Tanzania; the Great Migration river crossings (July–October) are best seen from Kenya. Timing your trip to catch the best of both is the ideal.

Itinerary Planning Tips
What is the most common itinerary mistake tourists make?
Trying to see too much in too little time. Kenya is vast — distances between parks look deceptively short on a map but take much longer on real roads. Build buffer days. If a game drive runs long because you are watching a lion pride hunt, you want the flexibility to stay — not a tight transfer to catch. Two nights minimum at every wildlife destination. Three nights is better at the Maasai Mara.
Should I plan my itinerary around a specific event?
If the Great Migration is on your bucket list, plan specifically for July to October and book 4–6 months ahead. For calving season (young wildebeest), go January–February to Tanzania's Serengeti. For fewer crowds and lower prices, March and November are excellent. See our best time to visit guide.
