Kenya rewards travelers who explore by road. A rental car gives you access to national parks, highland tea country, Indian Ocean beaches and Rift Valley lakes that most package tourists never reach. Here are the ten best places to visit in Kenya by car, with driving distances from Nairobi, road conditions and the right vehicle for each.
1. Maasai Mara National Reserve

Distance from Nairobi: 280 km via Narok — approx. 5–6 hours
Vehicle: 4x4 required inside the reserve
Best time: July–October (Great Migration), January–February (calving season)
Kenya's most famous game reserve offers unmatched big cat sightings, the annual wildebeest migration and vast open savanna landscapes. The drive from Nairobi via Narok is mainly on good tarmac, with the final 60 km on murram road into the Mara.
2. Amboseli National Park

Distance from Nairobi: 240 km via Namanga Road — approx. 4 hours
Vehicle: 4x4 recommended; compact SUV can manage in dry season
Best time: June–October, January–February
Amboseli is world-famous for its large elephant herds walking against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro across the Tanzanian border. The park is compact and well-signposted — one of the most accessible drives from Nairobi.
3. Lake Nakuru National Park

Distance from Nairobi: 160 km via the Nakuru Highway — approx. 2.5 hours
Vehicle: 4x4 recommended; saloon workable on main tracks
Best time: Year-round
Famous for both black and white rhinos, plus lion, leopard, flamingos and giraffe. Nakuru town is a comfortable base with good accommodation options.
4. Diani Beach, South Coast

Distance from Mombasa: 36 km via Likoni Ferry — approx. 1.5 hours
Vehicle: Saloon or SUV both fine
Best time: January–March, June–September
Kenya's finest beach — powdery white sand, warm turquoise water and a lively strip of restaurants and water sports. Hire a car in Mombasa or have your Nairobi vehicle driven down on the overnight train (car ferry service available). The Likoni Ferry crossing is free and an experience in itself.
5. Samburu National Reserve

Distance from Nairobi: 345 km via Nanyuki — approx. 5 hours
Vehicle: 4x4 required
Best time: June–October, January–March
Northern Kenya's best-kept secret. Samburu hosts the “Samburu Special Five” — reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, Beisa oryx, Somali ostrich and gerenuk — found nowhere else in Kenya. The Ewaso Ng'iro river runs through the reserve and attracts wildlife from miles around.
6. Hell's Gate National Park
Distance from Nairobi: 90 km via Naivasha — approx. 1.5 hours
Vehicle: Saloon or SUV fine
Best time: Year-round
The only Kenyan park where you can cycle and walk among the wildlife (no lions or elephants here, but zebra, giraffe, baboons and antelope are plentiful). The dramatic gorge and geothermal landscape inspired the scenery in the film The Lion King.
7. Mount Kenya National Park
Distance from Nairobi: 175 km via Thika Road — approx. 3 hours to Nanyuki
Vehicle: 4x4 for forest tracks; saloon for Nanyuki town
Best time: January–February, August–September (clearest skies)
Africa's second-highest peak (5,199m) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day visitors can drive to the Sirimon or Naro Moru gates for forest walks and wildlife. The Laikipia plateau surrounding Mount Kenya is excellent for conservancy visits and horse or camel riding.
8. Lake Bogoria National Reserve
Distance from Nairobi: 220 km via Nakuru — approx. 3.5 hours
Vehicle: 4x4 strongly recommended (rough tracks to hot springs)
Best time: October–April (flamingo season)
An alkaline lake in the Rift Valley floor, bordered by geysers and hot springs. Hundreds of thousands of flamingos turn the lake pink during peak season. The approach road is rough and very rewarding.
9. Tsavo East National Park
Distance from Nairobi: 280 km via Mombasa Road — approx. 4 hours to Voi Gate
Vehicle: 4x4 required
Best time: June–October, January–February
Kenya's largest national park — vast red-dusted landscapes, the famous red elephants of Tsavo, lions and endless wilderness. Combine with Tsavo West for a multi-day road trip, or drive all the way to Mombasa (3 hours further) to end your trip on the coast.
10. Kisumu and Lake Victoria
Distance from Nairobi: 340 km via Nakuru — approx. 5.5 hours

Kisumusits on the shore of Lake Victoria, the world's largest tropical lake. The drive from Nairobi through the Great Rift Valley and into the highlands is one of Kenya's most scenic road journeys. Stop at the Equator marker at Maseno and explore Impala Sanctuary in Kisumu.
