Every question we have ever been asked about renting a car in Kenya — compiled and answered honestly so you can plan with confidence.

Licensing & Documentation

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to rent a car in Kenya?

Not strictly — Kenya accepts your home country license for up to 90 days if it is printed in English. However, an IDP is strongly recommended because: (1) some rental companies require it, (2) police at checkpoints may request it, and (3) it protects you in any insurance claim. IDPs cost around US$20 from your national automobile association (AAA in the US, AA in the UK, NRMA in Australia) and are valid for one year.

What documents do I need at pickup?

What is the minimum age to rent a car in Kenya?

Most companies set the minimum at 23 years for standard vehicles and 25 years for large 4x4s and luxury vehicles. Some add a young-driver surcharge for drivers under 25. There is typically no maximum age limit, though some companies ask for a medical fitness confirmation for drivers over 70.

Can I rent a car in Kenya if I hold an EU, UK or Australian license?

Yes. All of these licenses are accepted. EU licenses, UK licenses and Australian licenses are all valid in Kenya for self-drive hire. The only requirement is that your license must be in the Latin alphabet — if yours is in Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic or another script, you will need an IDP.

Costs, Deposits & Hidden Fees

What does the daily rate actually include?

When you book directly with us, the quoted rate includes: the vehicle, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), third-party liability insurance, unlimited mileage and 24/7 roadside support. It does notinclude fuel, park entry fees, tolls (Nairobi Expressway) or the driver's daily allowance if you add a chauffeur. We do not charge surprise credit card fees or airport surcharges.

What are the hidden costs tourists get caught out by?

The biggest surprises reported by travelers on TripAdvisor and travel forums:

Do I need a credit card? Can I pay by debit card or cash?

A credit card is preferred for the security deposit pre-authorisation (the hold is released when you return the car undamaged). Debit cards are accepted at some companies with a higher cash deposit. We accept M-Pesa, Visa and Mastercard for payment of the rental itself.

How much is the security deposit?

Deposits range from KES 30,000 to KES 150,000 (approximately US$230–US$1,150) depending on vehicle category. The deposit is a pre-authorisation hold, not a charge — it is released within 5–10 working days of returning the vehicle in good condition.

Insurance

Does my US/UK/Australian travel insurance cover Kenya car rental?

Some travel insurance policies include rental car excess coverage — but many do not, or they have Africa exclusions. Check your specific policy before travel. US credit cards (Visa Signature, Mastercard Gold and above) often include collision damage waiver, but this usually requires you to decline the rental company's CDW — which in Kenya is risky given road conditions. We recommend keeping the included CDW and checking whether your card or travel policy tops up the excess amount.

What does CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) cover?

CDW reduces your financial liability if the car is damaged in an accident. It does not cover: personal injury, theft of belongings from the vehicle, damage caused by driving under the influence, damage caused by deliberate misuse, or driving off-road in a vehicle not rated for it. Third-party liability (injuries to other road users) is covered by mandatory Kenyan insurance included with every rental.

Roads, Driving & Safety

What are Kenyan police checkpoints like? What do I do?

Police roadblocks are common throughout Kenya, especially on Mombasa Road, the Nairobi–Nakuru highway and at park entrances. The procedure is simple:

Is it safe to drive alone in Kenya?

Yes — driving alone in Kenya during daylight hours on main roads is safe. The key rules: avoid night driving outside cities, keep car doors locked in slow city traffic, do not leave valuables visible, and stick to well-travelled routes. Solo female travelers regularly self-drive in Kenya without incident. If you are driving into very remote northern Kenya (Turkana, Moyale corridor), check the current security situation before departure.

Are there toll roads?

Yes. The Nairobi Expressway (from JKIA to Westlands) charges tolls: KES 100–200 per section depending on vehicle class. Payment is by M-Pesa (most convenient), cash at the booth or pre-loaded Expressway card. The older Uhuru Highway remains free and runs parallel — use this if you want to avoid tolls.

What fuel does my rental car use?

Most hire cars in Kenya run on diesel. This is critical — putting petrol in a diesel engine causes serious damage and will void your insurance. The fuel type is printed on the fuel cap and stated in your rental agreement. Reliable fuel brands at stations across Kenya: Shell, Total, Rubis, Hass and National Oil.

Cross-Border Driving

Can I drive a Kenya rental car to Tanzania?

Generally no — most Kenya-registered rental vehicles are not permitted to cross into Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda or other East African countries without specific prior authorisation from the rental company. This is an insurance and registration matter, not just a preference. If you need to travel between Kenya and Tanzania, options include:

Can I drive to Uganda?

Same restriction applies. Nairobi to Kampala by road is approximately 700 km (9–10 hours). If you need to travel this route, we recommend flying or taking a shuttle. Speak to us if you need a cross-border vehicle arrangement — it requires extra insurance documentation and advance booking.

Vehicle Questions & National Parks

Do I need a 4x4 for every national park?

No — but you need one for most safari parks. See our full guide: Do You Need a 4x4 for the Maasai Mara?

Can I exit the car inside a national park?

Only at designated picnic sites and viewpoints. You must never exit your vehicle near wildlife. This rule applies without exception — penalties are serious and the risk is real.

How do I pay park entry fees?

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) parks accept M-Pesa via the eCitizen portal and at gate payment points. Pre-purchasing online at ecitizen.go.ke saves time at the gate and is strongly recommended during peak season (July–August, December–January).

What if my car breaks down inside a national park?

Stay inside the vehicle. Call our 24/7 support line — we will coordinate with the park rangers and dispatch a recovery vehicle. Do not attempt to walk for help in big-five country.

Booking

How far in advance should I book?

For peak season (July–August Great Migration, December–January) book at least 4–6 weeks ahead — quality 4x4s are reserved early. For shoulder season, 1–2 weeks is usually fine. Last-minute bookings (under 48 hours) are possible for saloon cars but risky for specific 4x4 models.

Can I book from the US, UK or Australia?

Yes. We accept bookings by email, WhatsApp and phone from any country. Payment can be made by international bank transfer, Visa, Mastercard or PayPal. We will send a confirmed booking with all vehicle and pickup details before your departure.

Can I cancel or change my booking?

Cancellations made more than 72 hours before the collection date are fully refunded. For cancellations within 72 hours, a one-day rental fee may be retained. Date changes are accommodated where the vehicle is available — contact us as early as possible.
