Is Diani Beach worth visiting?

Yes — Diani is Kenya's finest beach.Located about 30km south of Mombasa, Diani is consistently ranked among Africa's top beaches. The beach stretches for 17km of soft white sand fringed by palm trees and lapped by warm, clear Indian Ocean water. The reef protects the swimming area, making it safe year-round. There is a full range of accommodation from budget guesthouses to luxury beach hotels, plus a lively strip of restaurants, bars and water sports operators.

What water sports are available at Diani?

• Kite surfing: Diani is one of East Africa's premier kite surfing spots — steady south-east trade winds from June to September make conditions ideal

How do I get to Diani Beach from Nairobi?

Two options:

• Fly: Diani has its own airstrip (Ukunda Airport) with daily flights from Nairobi Wilson Airport — approximately 45 minutes. Most convenient option.
• Drive + ferry or fly to Mombasa: Fly Nairobi to Mombasa (45 min) then drive south ~30km via the Likoni Ferry crossing (30–60 min depending on queue). Or drive the full 490km from Nairobi — approximately 6–7 hours on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway — and pick up a hire car in Mombasa before driving south.

What is Watamu like?

Watamu is a small fishing village and beach resort 120km north of Mombasa, known for its exceptional marine life and a more relaxed, less developed atmosphere than Diani. The Watamu Marine National Park and Reserve protects coral reefs that are among Kenya's finest for diving and snorkelling. The beach itself is stunning — powdery white sand and clear water in shades of turquoise and deep blue.

Watamu attracts a mix of Italian tourists (a longstanding Italian community has influenced the local food scene), marine biologists, and travelers looking for something quieter than Diani. It is also one of Kenya's best spots for sea turtle nesting — the Local Ocean Conservation trust runs turtle conservation programmes with volunteer opportunities.

Is Watamu or Diani better?

Different, not better or worse. Diani is better for variety of activities, nightlife, and a wider range of accommodation. Watamu is better for marine life, diving, a quieter atmosphere, and authentic village character. If you love diving and want to avoid a resort scene, choose Watamu. If you want world-class kite surfing, more restaurant choices, and a social atmosphere, choose Diani.

What is Malindi known for?

Malindi, just 17km from Watamu, is one of Kenya's oldest coastal towns — Vasco da Gama stopped here in 1498. The town has a significant Italian expatriate community, giving it an unexpected European cafe and restaurant culture alongside traditional Swahili architecture. Malindi Marine National Park protects coral gardens excellent for snorkelling. The beaches are wide and long, though the water can be murkier than Watamu's protected bay during certain seasons due to river sediment.

Malindi is also the access point for the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Reserve— one of East Africa's largest remaining coastal forest patches and a superb birdwatching destination.

What is Lamu like?

Lamu is Kenya's most extraordinary coastal destination — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the oldest continuously inhabited town in East Africa. There are no cars on Lamu Island (only donkeys and boats), the architecture is pure Swahili with ornate carved doors and narrow coral-stone alleyways, and the pace of life is entirely its own. The beaches on adjacent Manda and Shela are pristine and very quiet.

Important: Travel to Lamu should be by air only — do not attempt to drive through Lamu County mainland, which carries a government travel advisory. Fly from Nairobi Wilson or Mombasa Moi International to Lamu Airport on Manda Island, then take a short boat across to Lamu Town.

Is Mombasa worth visiting?

Mombasa is Kenya's second city and the gateway to the coast. Old Town Mombasa — with its Portuguese-built Fort Jesus (a UNESCO site), Swahili architecture, and spice markets — is genuinely worth a half-day exploration. The city itself is not a beach destination but is close to beach suburbs north (Nyali, Mtwapa) and serves as the main transport hub for the coast. Most visitors use Mombasa as a transit point rather than a destination, though Fort Jesus and Old Town justify a longer stop.

Can I combine a Kenya safari with a beach holiday?

Yes — and this is one of Kenya's greatest strengths as a destination. The classic combo is a 10–14 day trip: 5–7 days on safari (Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru) followed by 4–5 days on the coast (Diani or Watamu). Domestic flights connect Nairobi to Mombasa in 45 minutes and Nairobi directly to Diani (Ukunda) in the same time — so the transition is seamless.

How do I get along the Kenya coast by road?

The B8 coastal highway connects Mombasa, Watamu and Malindi — a pleasant 2–2.5 hour drive on a well-maintained road. Diani is south of Mombasa via the Likoni Ferry. A hired car is the best way to explore the coast, allowing you to combine multiple beaches, visit villages, and stop at your own pace. What should I wear on the Kenya coast?

The Kenya coast has a significant Muslim population, particularly in Mombasa Old Town, Malindi and Lamu. Dress modestly away from beach areas — cover shoulders and knees when in town. On the beach itself, standard swimwear is fine at resort hotels. In Lamu Town, women are advised to dress conservatively (loose, long clothing) out of respect for the local community.

When is the best time to visit the Kenya coast?
